Flipping the Script is a monograph designed for people who work in communities to identify and address issues of white privilege, oppression, racism and power as they play out in this work. It is for community builders, grant makers, technical assistance providers and others who are trying to develop more equitable and thoughtful partnerships with community residents and organizations. Written by Maggie Potapchuk, MP Associates; Sally Leiderman, Center for Assessment and Policy Development; and with Donna Bivens, Women’s Theological Center and Barbara Major, St. Thomas Health Clinic, this monograph is offered collectively as a resource for people deeply invested in community building work. An analysis of community building through the lens of white privilege suggests many places in which we might do our work differently. It also questions the most basic premises of this work. Flipping the Script can be downloaded here.
The Applied Research Center is a public policy institute advancing racial justice through research, advocacy and journalism. Visit their Web site for provocative readings and ideas to help in your work and find links to ally organizations and other useful online resources.
RACE – The Power of an Illusion Produced by California Newsreel in association with the Independent Television Service (ITVS).
“We hope this series can help clear away the biological underbrush and leave starkly visible the underlying social, economic, and political conditions that disproportionately channel advantages and opportunities to white people. Perhaps then we can shift the conversation from discussing diversity and respecting cultural difference to building a more just and equitable society.” Larry Adelman Series Executive Producer & Co-Director of California Newsreel
